DES MOINES, IA - Officials with the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa today denounced the U.S. Supreme Court's 4-4 vote regarding a case that challenged President Barack Obama's plan to shield up to 5 million unauthorized immigrants from deportation and allow them to work in the United States.
The high court's vote, a tie, meant that an appeals court ruling to block Obama's plan would stand.
"Not allowing these temporary solutions to move forward leaves millions of undocumented immigrants at risk of deportation and will separate families," said Joe Enriquez Henry, National LULAC vice president of the Midwest.
Obama's plan would have allowed parents who met certain requirements to receive authorization to work in the United States for three years at a time, and it would have expanded the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The status of young people who qualified for the initial DACA program in 2012 was not at issue in this case.
"It is clear from this most recent court action that we need a complete overhaul of the immigration system within our country," Enriquez Henry said. "We were hopeful the President’s plan would be the first step in this process, but it appears as though our country is taking another step backward."
