DAVENPORT, IA - The League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa's Council 10 will help students and their families learn about financial aid and how to apply for various scholarships at a Jan. 23 workshop.

The workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Ambrose University's McCarthy Hall, 518 W. Locust St.

A representative from the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) will serve as the facilitator and explain the process for filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and how to understand the results once the application has been processed. Those who attend also will learn about several scholarships for which students can apply that include LULAC, Ascentra Credit Union and the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The workshop also will address how to research for scholarships and how to write a scholarship essay.

Council 10 has co-hosted the event with ICAN for the past three years.

"The number of participants has increased every year, which tells us there is a need in our community to offer this service to our high school students and their families," said Matt Casillas, president of Council 10. "Part of our LULAC mission is to support our youth and to ensure they have promising futures."

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the nation's largest and oldest civil rights volunteer-based organization that empowers Hispanic Americans and builds strong Latino communities.
