Davenport LULAC to award $25,000 in academic scholarships

DAVENPORT - Council 10 of the League of United Latin American Citizens will give $25,000 in scholarships to 33 students at its annual scholarship awards banquet on July 19.

The banquet will be at 4:30 p.m. at the Davenport LULAC Center, 4224 Ricker Hill Road. Guest speaker is Bob Ontiveros, a local businessman, entrepreneur and community supporter who is chairman of Group O.

This year’s scholarship recipients are: Andrew Quested, Lizandra Gomez-Ramirez, Asata Caldwell, Angela Olvera, Taylor Johnson, Emmilee Lopez, Nidia Villalpando, Oscar Castro, Bailey Brockhouse, Daisey Moran, Marisa Moreno, Alejandra Martinez, Marrissa Terronez, Guadalupe Chavez, Dante Arguello, Patel Harsh, Jennifer Sarabia-Gomez, Shaliyah Mays, Mayra Vasquez, Michael Alvarado, Sergio Hernandez, Haidyn Hank, Maria Ramos, Martin Ramirez-Chimal, Fatima Cabrera-Razo, Gerardo Bojorquez, Nicholas Hirst, Faith Nieketien, Daniel Nunez, Myah Cordova-Ramirez, Andrea Ochoa-Raya, McKenna Van Meighem and Marissa Kronfeld. 

LULAC Council 10 raised money for the scholarships. That money is matched by about 60 percent from the LULAC National Educational Service Center. Council 10 also will work with local colleges and universities to continue a reciprocal program where college students could receive additional matching funds. 

LULAC Council 10 has awarded more than $430,000 to 744 students in the Quad Cities area.

Founded in 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens is the oldest U.S. Latino civil rights organization. There are more than 1,000 local LULAC councils, which hold voter registration drives, provide awareness to residents about language and immigration issues, sponsor programs and advocate for Latinos.
