DES MOINES, IA - Members of the League of United Latino American Citizens Council 307 will accept applications for its annual scholarship until March 31.

The scholarships will be presented at the annual Latino Leadership Awards Banquet, which will take place later this year. Students will be notified after June 15 if they are a scholarship recipient. Last year, Council 307 presented two $1,000 scholarships to two Des Moines-area high school seniors.

"It is vitally important that we support our youth and provide them with the resources they need in order to succeed," said Jorge Valencia, the banquet committee chairman.

Council 307's scholarship committee will evaluate each applicant based on the application criteria. Scholarships will be awarded to qualified Hispanic students who have applied to or are enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. college or university, including two-year colleges and vocational schools. Awards begin at $250. Scholarships may be used for the payment of tuition, academic fees, room, board and the purchase of required educational materials and books.

The application is available on the Council 307 website: http://www.lulaciowa.org/documents/news/114.pdf.

This is the fourth year Council 307 has presented an academic scholarship to area high school students. Nationally, LULAC has considered education its No. 1 priority since the organization was established in 1929.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights volunteer-based organization that empowers Hispanic Americans and builds strong Latino communities. Headquartered in Washington, D.C. with 1,000 councils around the United States and Puerto Rico, LULAC’s programs, services and advocacy address the most important issues for Latinos, meeting critical needs of today and the future.
